How Long Does a Trex Deck Installation Take?

Time it takes for Trex Decking to be installed

If your current deck has seen better days, replacing it with Trex composite decking is a great way to bring it back to life. When working with our customers, one of the most common questions we get is: how long a Trex deck installation takes to complete?

Unfortunately, there’s no “one size fits all” answer to that question. The truth is that your deck installation project might take more or less time than your neighbor’s project. It can vary so much based on a number of different factors.

Today’s composite decking systems are engineered for durability and low maintenance, but they still require careful planning and proper installation. Both Trex and TimberTech emphasize that the condition of the framing, proper joist spacing, fastening methods, deck design, and site conditions can all affect the installation process.

To help you feel more prepared for your deck replacement, continue reading to learn more about the different factors that can impact your project’s timeline.

Searching for a Deck Contractor in Northern Virginia

Perhaps the most important part of your Trex deck installation project is looking for the right contractor to hire. With so many options available, narrowing down your search can feel like an almost impossible task, which can take weeks or even months.

To help it feel more manageable, start by doing a search for contractors in your area and reading through customer reviews. This gives you an unbiased look at what it’s like to work with a particular contractor from the people that know best.

You’ll also want to find a contractor who has experience installing Trex decking so they know the proper way to do it. Here at DeckGuru, we’re proud to be a TrexPro Platinum Builder, which means that we have completed extensive training in installing Trex products and we adhere to the strict decking installation requirements set by Trex.

This experience matters because composite decking is not simply installed over any existing frame. Trex recommends evaluating the framing and following its current installation requirements, while TimberTech likewise instructs installers to make sure the substructure is level, structurally sound, and properly spaced before decking is installed.

Working with a vetted and experienced Trex builder can give you extra peace of mind that your project will go smoothly.

The Planning Process

Once you find the right contractor to hire for your project, you can start planning the specifics of your project. That starts with evaluating the state of your current deck. When you hire the DeckGuru team, we’ll come out to evaluate the state of your deck to determine how long it might take to upgrade it to Trex decking.

This evaluation is especially important when replacing wood decking with composite. For example, Trex generally recommends joists no more than 16 inches on center for standard composite installations, with closer spacing required for some layouts such as diagonal installations.

TimberTech’s current composite installation guidance also specifies a maximum 16-inch on-center joist spacing for standard applications and recommends 12-inch spacing for certain angled installations.

From there, we’ll talk to you about what you want to get out of your upgraded deck. We’ll take this time to talk to you about what kind of features you want your new deck to have, such as railings, built-in lighting, and seating options.

We’ll also show you material samples so you can decide which color and style will work best with the rest of your home’s exterior. Depending on what you choose, we might have to wait for the materials to come in, which can impact your project’s timeline.

Another important component is how much sun your deck receives when selecting a decking color and product line.

Trex now offers decking with SunComfortable™ Technology designed to reduce heat buildup compared with its original boards, while TimberTech offers Advanced PVC decking with Cool Touch® Technology in select colors. Even with these technologies, both manufacturers note that decking can become hot in direct sunlight, particularly with darker colors.

Securing the Right Permits

One of the many benefits of hiring a professional deck builder for your installation project is that they have the knowledge it takes to ensure that your project is handled correctly. When we come out to evaluate your existing deck, we’ll check the zoning laws in your area to see if we need to apply for a new permit, depending on the scope of your project.

If a new permit is needed, we take care of the application process and keep you updated about it along the way. If you do need a building permit, this can sometimes delay your project by a few days or weeks, depending on your local government.

Permit requirements vary by municipality, so your contractor should confirm the applicable local building codes and permitting requirements before construction begins. Manufacturer installation guides are not a substitute for local code requirements; Trex and TimberTech both direct installers to account for applicable local requirements when planning a deck.

The Building Process

The most exciting part of the deck installation process is often the part with the most variables. Once we start construction, there are a number of factors that can impact the project timeline.

The Structure of Your Existing Deck

We’ll always put safety first when upgrading your deck. This means looking at the existing structure and making sure it’s sound before installing Trex decking on top of it. If anything needs to be replaced, it can impact the length of your project.

The condition and layout of the existing framing can be one of the biggest factors in determining whether a deck can be resurfaced or requires more extensive structural work. Composite boards are more rigid than traditional wood decking, so an uneven or improperly spaced frame can become noticeable in the finished surface. Trex specifically notes that uneven joists may need to be corrected before composite decking is installed.

A contractor may also need to add blocking or additional framing to support board ends, picture-frame borders, stairs, railing posts, or other design details. TimberTech similarly recommends proper blocking and joist preparation as part of its composite installation process.

The Size of Your Deck

It should come as no surprise that the larger your deck is, the longer it will take to complete.

As a general example, Trex currently estimates approximately 8–12 hours for a 14-by-22-foot deck-frame project with a two-person team, including hardware and blocking. That is only a manufacturer example—not a promised timeline for a complete homeowner project—and actual installation time varies with the design, framing, site conditions, and features.

The Design You Have in Mind

Installing a simple square Trex deck won’t take as much time as a more complicated layout. If your deck is a unique shape or includes complex features like stairs, expect it to take a bit longer to install.

Details such as picture framing, angled decking, multiple levels, curves, stairs, built-in seating, lighting, and custom railing can add cutting, framing, fastening, and finishing work. For example, both Trex and TimberTech provide specific installation guidance for picture-frame layouts and other configurations because they can require additional framing and fastening considerations.

The Specifics of Your Backyard

How easy is it to access your deck? If there are some obstructions in the way, like trees or other landscaping features that make it difficult to get the installation equipment in your backyard, your project may take longer.

Limited access can also affect how materials are delivered, where tools and debris can be staged, and how easily an old deck can be demolished and removed. A backyard with steep grades, narrow gates, landscaping, fences, or other obstacles may require additional labor or careful material handling.

The Extra Features You Add

As we talked about in the planning phase, installing a Trex deck is a great time to add those extra features you’ve always wanted. However, the more additions you add to your deck, the more it will impact the project’s timeline.

Railing is one example. Modern composite decking projects can include a wide range of railing styles, lighting, stairs, fascia, picture framing, and other finishing details. Each requires its own installation steps, so choosing these features early can help your contractor account for them when creating the project schedule.

The Weather Outside

Finally, some things are always going to be out of our control during the Trex decking installation process. Since our crews have to be outside to work on your project, bad weather can impact how long it takes to complete your project.

Fortunately, we get fairly mild weather here in Northern Virginia, so weather delays don’t happen all that often. But, in the event of rain, snow, ice, or heavy winds, keep in mind that your installation may be delayed.

Weather can also affect certain stages of construction differently. For example, wet conditions may make demolition, framing, material handling, or other outdoor work more difficult or unsafe. Your contractor should determine when conditions are appropriate for continuing work while following the decking manufacturer’s installation requirements.

How Long Does a Trex Deck Last?

Installation time is only one part of the equation when you’re planning a new composite deck. Trex decking is designed for long-term, low-maintenance use, and current Trex residential decking warranties range from 25 to 50 years depending on the product collection. TimberTech composite decking collections likewise carry limited residential warranties that vary by product line, with current composite warranties ranging from 25 to 30 years for the collections covered by its composite warranty documentation.

That doesn’t mean homeowners can install the deck and never think about it again. Trex recommends routine cleaning, with soap and water generally sufficient for its newer high-performance decking lines. TimberTech also describes its decking as low-maintenance and provides product-specific cleaning recommendations. Following the manufacturer’s care instructions helps preserve the appearance of the deck and is important for maintaining applicable warranty coverage.
